The Hackman Theatre Awards

The Hackman Theatre Awards are an irreverent appreciation of the year that was in Auckland theatre. There’s singing, dancing, prize giving, a pie baking competition and the audience is basically a who’s who of the industry.

This year Q sponsored the award for best special effect, which went to Fringe show Sirens for their incredible synchronised swimming. We were also able to play a part in the award for the best newcomer. This year there were five winners of the award; for acting (Tim Carlsen and Andrew Ford), direction (Abigail Greenwood), set design (Jessika Verryt) and stage management (Ruby Reihana-Wilson) and each were awarded a special prize by an organisation

Abigail’s prize was courtesy of Q and took the form of two week’s free rehearsal space in Vault. We’re very excited to be able to award Abigail’s hard work throughout the year, but more than that we can’t wait to see the work that she creates during her rehearsal time at Q.

Other winners from our opening season were Eve Gordon for best entrance in Venus Is…, Sophie Henderson and Nathan Whitaker for best pash in Tartuffe and Mia Blake for best dancing in Tartuffe.

A huge congratulations to all the winners and particularly to Roger Hall who was very deservedly awarded the lifetime achievement award. Roll on next year!
