Interview: Carla Theunissen

We talk to Q's Director, Carla, about our first season, settling in to New Zealand and what to expect from Q next year...

Tell us what you do.
I’m the Director, which basically means I have both operational and artistic responsibility for Q.

What have been the highlights of Q’s opening season for you?
There’ve been so many. Definitely the opening party, directed by Mike Mizrahi and Marie Adams – it was fantastic and such a great way to open.
I loved having Tempo here - to have the buzz of a festival in the building and so many people of all different age groups.
It was wonderful having Atamira Dance Company, Tawata Productions and Taki Rua Productions all here at the same time.
There really are too many more to name!

How are you settling into New Zealand?
Good. I love my neighbourhood up by K Road and I really like being able to walk to work for the first time ever, and wandering round the CBD generally. I haven’t had much chance to travel yet, but the West Coast beaches are great and I really love Waiheke too.

What were you doing before you came to Q?
I was working as a producer for Sydney Theatre Company for six months on international co-productions. Before that I was Head of Music at Sydney Opera House and before that I was Associate Director on the Sydney Festival.

And does your music background mean you’re hoping to do a lot more live music at Q?
Yes, definitely. We want to get lots of great local and international acts onto the stage.

What else can we expect in 2012?
We’re thrilled to have Auckland Theatre Company and Silo coming back next year. ATC is doing Little Shop of Horrors and Silo is doing Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls and Noel Coward’s Private Lives. We’ll have lots more local theatre and dance. And we’re very excited to have some of the Comedy Festival here too – they’ll be the first people to use all three venues, Rangatira, Loft and our rehearsal room Vault, as performance spaces at the same time.

And finally, what do you want for Christmas?
I really want an ipad! If anyone’s reading this who has a connection to Apple, can they please think of me when they’re doing their Christmas shopping!
