Lethal Cocktail

Sarah Ashworth • Jump the Q

“GASP!” pause, “OH MY GOD!”  That was the audience interactive part of Friday night’s late night hospital romp brought to life by Instant Kiwis. But it was also my own reaction upon taking the first sip of my cocktail in Q’s sumptuous and elegant bar.

Rarely, have I seen someone take such pride in their work that they would seek the customer out after that aforementioned first sip to see if the drink was to my liking. It certainly was! So, full marks to the supremely gifted mixologist Laura. It was a Strawberry Daiquiri to die for.

The buzzword of the beginning of my night certainly has to be class. From the minute I walked into Citizen Q, the warm ambience was friendly and inviting. As were the staff. The lighting was flattering and the seats were “settle in for the evening” brand of comfortable. That ticks all the boxes for me as a good way to bring in the weekend.

I’ll also take this brief moment to mention the toilets… Maybe it’s just me, but I always feel this is the unofficial measure of how classy an establishment is. At Q, not only is there an abundance of mirror space but there are also little individual hooks next to each sink for you to hang your bag while you wash your hands. AMAZING!

So, moving on, upstairs in Loft we were to be treated to some late night improv by a motley crew of assorted characters. I only need to change one letter of “class” for my next buzzword. Crass. But in the best possible way! For the next hour this slick ensemble glided effortlessly from one outlandish scene to the next.

Everyone surrounding me was in fits of laughter as the action became more and more absurd. It seems incredible that they were really making it up right before our eyes. There were certainly some very quick and very imaginative people on that stage.

Thank you Q for treating me to your intimate delights. I feel like I’ve gone on a fabulous first date and I’m wondering how soon the second date can be without appearing desperate. I suppose a good excuse would be to go along to the next installment of Instant Kiwis - can't think of a better way to start the weekend.
