My surname is also Chong. But my 'Chong' is different from yours. Yours has been castrated. So why bother to find any roots? You don't have roots any more....

One of Singapore's most beloved solo shows, Roots by Oliver Chong is one one woman’s quest to find her familial identity in the cultural confusion of Singapore. Digging up forgotten ghosts and stumbling upon more questions than answers, we follow Amanda Grace as she attempts to reclaim her past. With parallels to New Zealand's youthful cultural identity, Roots is a universal story of the surprises and hardships in discovering who you are and what you're made of.

Filled with absurd, surprising and strangely familiar characters played by multi-talented Singaporean-Kiwi actress Amanda Grace Leo and directed by Chye-Ling Huang, Roots is performed in English and Mandarin for its New Zealand premiere, with surtitles in both Mandarin and English, and is presented as part of the Auckland Lantern Festival lineup.

The power of Chong's intimate, compelling Roots lies both in that anxiety over ancestry, but also the ability to lay it to rest - to embrace it as part of our history and soldier through it to find an identity of our own. - The Straits Times, Singapore
