ARTIST PASS // Footnote New Zealand Dance

Thirty years is a long time to be at the forefront of contemporary dance, and it’s enough time to learn that survival isn’t possible without adaptation. This year Footnote New Zealand Dance presents 30Forward in the 2015 Tempo Dance Festival – a spirited new production celebrating their 30th birthday. We asked Footnote to share some tid-bits about the show...

Something you may not yet know about 30Forward is...
"The show has two halves - one that features highlights from past works and one with a brand new work by Malia Johnston. The highlights have been selected by Footnote founder Deirdre Tarrant, and their inclusion in 30Forward means we've learned choreography by 7 different choreographers for this one show!"

Something you may not yet know about Footnote is...
"It is New Zealand's longest running contemporary dance company. Our current company dancers hail from Northland, Gisborne, Auckland, Wellington, Lower Hutt and Dunedin."

The other shows in Tempo Dance Festival that Footnote is most looking forward to seeing...
"We're super excited to see as much as we can in the short time we're in Auckland for Tempo. Can't wait to see NZSD students performing in Preface by Ross McCormack, as well as Prime. Prime will be great for soaking up a number of different approaches to dance."

After experiencing the show...
"We want people to feel energised, engaged and impressed by 30Forward! Audiences are invited to deepen their connection to New Zealand's contemporary dance makers and performers - whether this comes through reflecting on the past or imagining the future of our movement."

The most nerve-wracking experiences in Footnote's history have been...
"Performing to friends, family and peers can be nerve-wracking. We know we're great at what we do, but there's a special kind of nervousness that applies to performing for those who know us and for those who speak the language of movement."

Final words...
"If you go to a show and absolutely love it, don't hesitate to see it again. Dance is like no other art form in its ability to present a new experience every time. This is one thing Footnote's management team often speak about after seeing the same show many times throughout a tour."
