Q&A with Robin Kelly, Musical Director of Here Lies Love

We caught up with Robin Kelly about the making of Silo Theatre's new disco-pop cabaret, Here Lies Love.

What attracted you to collaborating with Silo on HERE LIES LOVE?

I've been a huge fan of the album since it came out. David Byrne and Fatboy Slim are both legends and personal music heroes, so I believe it was actually me that suggested Silo do it. What's made it even more exciting is being able to work with Sophie Roberts directing (I think she's incredible), and a killer band of some of my favourite musicians, including Alex Freer (AC Freazy), Marika Hodgson (so much great stuff) and Paddy Free (Pitch Black)

What do you do to prepare for a show like this?

The album is on almost constant rotation. I'm learning the songs inside out through repeated, repeated, repeated listening until I know every beat, every note, every instrument. I'm also taking in all the collateral around. Reading David Byrne's essays and books, learning more about the Marcos regime. Generally trying to just live and breathe this album.

What's your favorite David Byrne or Fatboy Slim tune?

David Byrne - I Should Watch TV (collab with St Vincent on their album 'Love This Giant')
Fatboy Slim - has to be 'Rockafeller Skank'. I wore out my sister's cassette tape of 'You've Come A Long Way Baby' in 1998 :-P

What 3 words would you use to describe the show? Why?

Lush (the music is full disco inspired. Dripping in funk and strings and horns, just totally lavish)
Intoxicating (it's dance music, it's disco, it's Imelda Marcos, it all goes to your head)
Gorgeous (the set, the costumes, the lights. the incredible voices and musicians. Mwah)

What are you most excited about?

Collaborating with this group of musicians, including some really cool singers (Ria Hall! Villette!) and legendary musicians (Paddy Free! wtf?!)

What can the audience expect?

To have a completely joyous time.
