It’s a movie made live on stage. And a farewell to the local video store.
Streaming changed how we watch movies. But what happened to the places where we chose them together?
Set in a video store, Coil brings theatre and filmmaking together in full view of the audience. One actor plays every character, cameras capture the action, and footage is mixed and edited live, creating a movie on screen as it unfolds during the play.
As a eulogy for the end of an era and a moving experience shared cleverly through technology and performance, Coil gives us the loveable quirks of an indie comedy, the inventiveness of a Charlie Kaufman script, and the DIY mischief of Be Kind Rewind. But it’s also a gorgeous reflection on the joys and pitfalls of nostalgia that’ll hit you square in the feels. All for the glory and community of the local video store, which you can browse for real on stage after the show.
