Blending contemporary testimony with original text, Not King Lear is the latest play in development from this award-winning arts project created in partnership with the Auckland City Mission. It’s a playful yet serious retelling of the story of an old man in conflict with his children, who gives away his authority and falls into homelessness and mental ill-health.

Not King Lear is guest directed by Adrian Jackson, renowned for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Cardboard Citizens, the company of homeless and ex-homeless actors he founded in London in 1992.

About Hobson Street Theatre Company (HSTC)

HSTC was formed in 2010 in partnership with the Auckland City Mission, with an aim to tell stories that are full of heart, humour, and soul. With all work devised by company members, their rōpu has banned “sob stories” but instead explores ideas and stories of interest to them - from racism to friendship to haunted op shops. Their work can be raw, authentic, and riotous, but they always hope that the audience leaves feeling enlightened and uplifted.

Post-show Artist Talk: Saturday 9 March 8:30PM
Directly after Saturday's performance, there will be a discussion with Adrian Jackson (director), Bronwyn Bent (Hobson Street Theatre Company artistic director) and the full cast.
