Beyond Velvet

Beyond The Velvet, is a daring, glamorous celebration of dance, theatre, and spectacle. Performed by The Conservatory's 2025 cohort, the production brings together some of Aotearoa’s most exciting  choreographers to create an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

Blurring the lines between musical theatre, burlesque, commercial dance, contemporary, jazz and tap Beyond The Velvet unfolds like a living carnival, colorful, unpredictable, and alive with energy. From the moment audiences enter the space, the show is already in motion: performers spill into the theatre, as though they have stepped straight from the final bow of a glittering stage revue.

What follows is not a single story, but a kaleidoscope of theatrical worlds. Dancers slip between characters and heightened personas, shifting from moments of glamour and grandeur to chaos, and tenderness. Every scene offers a new surprise, whether it’s a striking ensemble, an intimate duet, or a surreal tableau that feels like a dream brought to life.

Beyond The Velvet is more than just a showcase of technique; it is an invitation into the thrill of live performance itself. With dazzling costumes and bold staging, the work embraces the theatricality of the stage while also lifting the curtain to reveal its many layers.

This is not a show of limitations, it is a playground of artistry where the spectacular collides with the unexpected. At its heart, Beyond Velvet is about wonder, and the joy of performance, delivered by a generation of dancers ready to take the stage by storm.
