Walking Together - A Discussion with Kura Te Ua

Kura Te Ua is the dynamic director of Hawaiki TŪ, a company that has been producing inspiring haka dance theatre since 2012. Kura is the brainpower behind Hawaiki TŪ's latest show, Taurite, and we were lucky enough to chat with her ahead of their upcoming season at Q.

Issue date:

Kura was raised in Te ao haka - Māori Performing Arts - and had valuable experiences in dance and theatre from an early age. She's been blessed to have whānau connections with Te Waka Huia and has represented them for over 20 years of national kapa haka competitions.

Within the wananga and learning of the art form are principles and values that guide the way forward.

Hawaiki TŪ's latest work, Taurite, is a large-scale haka dance theatre performance that is centred around the art of balance and duality. The show features ten super-talented kaihaka who Kura says bring the energy of 40+ members.

Kura Taurite 1 - Q Theatre

It hasn't all been easy for Kura and Hawaiki TŪ, though. There have been many challenges, including having sustainable resources to get the work done, especially over the Covid-19 period.

This is our 5th iteration, the cast and crew have evolved, and the narratives and purpose have become clearer. But not without sacrifice, faith and inspired action.

To get through the intense strain multiple lockdowns can have on a show, Kura had to connect with collaborators that believed in the vision and walked alongside the company the whole way.

Taurite Production Shot 2 - Q Theatre

Through the journey, the show had more time to strengthen and even improve, adding live music from the fantastic Maimoa Music. We hope you get the chance to see Taurite and the results of all this hard work.
